Health and wellness is always trending in Hollywood. From supplements to outrageous and unfounded alternative forms of medicine, celebrities are passionate about their wellness routines.

And while Hilary Swank may trump all celebrities with her 45-pill daily regimen, a number of A-Listers look to supplements for varying degrees of health and energy support. They may not be as over-the-top with their health routine as Swank, but they still glean the benefits of health, weight-loss and youthful good looks.

So what supplements are celebrities currently obsessing over? Here’s a quick list of the vitamins, nutrients and other supplements used by some of your favorite stars.

Human growth hormone (HGH)

HGH has become Hollywood’s secret weapon for combatting aging. Many celebrities avoid the topic because it indicates age and a loss of one’s natural vitality. But some proponents like Sylvester Stallone use it proudly, showing their youthful looks, strength and energy via Instagram. But what is HGH, and what does it do? And most importantly, is it safe?

HGH is naturally produced by the pituitary gland, but the amount our bodies create decreases as we get older. The FDA has approved the hormone as a treatment for certain growth-stunting diseases and to reverse muscle atrophy often experienced in HIV patients.

But now, celebrities have turned to HGH as one of the latest crazes for reducing body fat, reversing graying hair, rediscovering youthful vigor, smoothing wrinkles, bulking muscles and increasing libido. Many swear by the miracle results delivered by HGH. But these injections can cost thousands of dollars per treatment, making them a luxury most can’t afford.

But is HGH safe? Despite HGH’s benefits in the moment, the long-term effects can leave you less than healthy. A 30-year study of the effects of HGH on patients with growth diseases revealed an increased risk of cancer and heart disease. Experts believe that Hollywood’s obsession with the natural supplement is a potentially dangerous one, so don’t begin taking HGH before consulting with a doctor.

Adaptogens

Gwyneth Paltrow’s now-infamous GOOP website touts adaptogenic teas and drinks all the day long. But just because GOOP has a knack for making some crazy claims doesn’t mean you should dismiss this trend. Why? Because there is actually scientific evidence behind the use of these wonder herbs and mushrooms.

Adaptogens, a type of natural nootropic, have long been studied for their hormone-regulating abilities. Some studies have proven that they really do increase mental clarity and focus, leading to improved performance. Ashwagandha, for example, can decrease inflammation, and Rhodiola has a positive effect on everything from mood and anxiety to mental and physical performance.

So what are some of the top adaptogens among Hollywood’s A-Listers? Along with a host of less well-known adaptogens, some current celebrity favorites are ashwagandha, rhodiola and moringa—used mainly for their ability to slow or decrease the appearance of aging, and improve energy, mental clarity and focus.

Garcinia Cambogia

By far, one of Hollywood’s favorite dietary supplements seems to be the fat-blocking and fat-burning supplement Garcinia Cambogia. This plant grows in India and Asia and has been used for decades in Hollywood, though it’s experiencing a very-public comeback as celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Adele and Christina Aguilera show off their weight loss.

While there’s not much scientific evidence that Garcinia Cambogia is an effective weight-loss supplement, Hollywood has been singing its praises. The appetite-suppressing herb works mainly by helping the body burn glucose to avoid it turning to fat, and slows the entrance of sugars into the bloodstream. Essentially, the herb acts as a three-in-one fat burner, blocker and stopper. And that has Hollywood raving about it.

Another draw? Garcinia Cambogia is 100% natural and doesn’t contain any stimulants. Dr. Oz recommends taking 500-1000mg before every meal, but what form you take is up to you. The supplement can be commonly found in teas, capsules, extracts, tablets and lotions.

And while the few studies that have been done on Garcinia Cambogia didn’t show significant weight loss, celebrities continue to point to the plant as the key to their success. To date, it doesn’t appear to have any negative side effects, though the effects of long-term use are still to be determined. Curious to know more? Hollywood may have an ongoing love affair with image. But your favorite A-Listers have increasingly been turning toward supplements rather than medications to help achieve the better health they crave. And that’s a good thing.
