L-Theanine is becoming one of the more popular ingredients for weight loss and mood enhancement. In recent years, it has become a trendy ingredient for fat burner supplement manufacturers to include as part of their formula.
So what is it exactly? Allow me to uncomplicate this matter by telling a short story. You’ve heard of coffee; you’ve heard of green tea. And I’m sure if you’ve ever considered quitting coffee, you have read or heard somewhere that green tea has a more calm caffeine presence (maybe not in those exact words, but you’ve heard a similar pitch).

The answer is L-Theanine. Yes, I know, you feel more confused than before you started reading. Well, hang on, I am about to drop some logic up in here.
L-Theanine is an amino acid. It is also considered a nootropic. It occurs naturally in teas made from Camellia sinensis leaves. These teas include green tea, oolong tea and black tea. So when you drink green tea, you get some L-Theanine by default. And that’s what changes the tea’s chemistry in contrast to the coffee’s chemistry (yes, this is a rabbit hole).
L-Theanine is said to possibly act as an antioxidant, meaning it fights evil free radicals that could cause cancer. But more importantly, L-Theanine is said to have a calming effect on people. And this, my friends, solves the mystery as to why people often say that green tea is a better caffeine than coffee. The L-Theanine helps to balance out the caffeine’s sometimes edgy effect on people. Everyone metabolizes caffeine differently, so for some, the additional L-Theanine could work favorably.
So, How Does This Stuff Work?
The way in which L-Theanine may help people lose weight is more of an indirect journey. So allow me to start the engine so we can hit the road.
For some people, caffeine might be an intense experience. Caffeine could spike cortisol, a stress hormone that some people utilize for weight loss. Headaches and dizziness have been reported, but the honest truth is you don’t hear much in the way of bad side-effects when it comes to L-Theanine. The FDA granted L-Theanine a GRAS status. This means it is generally recognized as safe, but not fully approved.
What Makes It Good?

- May help people not overeat.
What Makes It Bad?
- Not enough evidence supporting claims.
- Brand vary dramatically. Many users report high variance between different brands, so it is essential to read as many L-Theanine reviews as possible.
I love L-Theanine. I find that it works great when paired with caffeine. It definitely increases my focus. It certainly adds an element of calmness without sedation.
But I’m not 100% sold that it’s a great ingredient for fat burner supplements. I’d say it is rather hit or miss in that department. I’d encourage anyone who wants to try L-Theanine to talk to their Doctor. It might be a worthwhile addition to your general supplements.
