Beachbody Shakeology Review: Is It Worth The Price?

by Joe Costello, CNC | Green Drinks & Superfood Drinks

shakeology_productBeachbody Shakeology is a superfood drink that ranks among the top 10 on the market. Overall, it is a decent product with good value, but it didn’t rank in the top 5 for a very good reason. Check out this comprehensive Shakeology review to see what’s under the hood of this robust green drink from the infomercial giant, Beach Body.

The main reason we do NOT recommend Shakeology is the fact that the superfood blend is significantly weaker than that of our top ranked greens powders. As a matter of fact, it contains less than 50% of the amount of superfoods as our top ranked greens drink. The lack of potency makes it impossible for us to feel comfortable recommending it.

BEST GREENS SUPPLEMENTS

Beachbody Shakeology review: Is Shakeology any good?

Shakeology is really the definition of an average greens powder. It’s good, but there’s nothing special about it. You’re getting an average amount of superfoods per serving, which translates to an average amount of benefits. With only 6,500 milligrams of superfoods per serving, you’re only getting about half the amount you truly need.

Are there any Shakeology coupon codes or promo discount vouchers?

Shakeology is not currently offering any coupon codes or discount vouchers. Remember, Beach Body is a very large corporation, so it’s pretty unlikely you’re going to be able to find any significant discounts because they are greedy. However, some of our more highly ranked greens powders offer better value and actually do have discounts available, so check out those reviews.

What does Shakeology do?

What does Shakeology do for you? Shakeology contains many vegetables and superfoods that are designed to help improve energy and vitality. Many of these powerful superfoods have detoxifying benefits and can work wonders for your overall gastrointestinal health. Shakeology also makes it less necessary for you to eat a lot of veggies since it already provides so many.

What are the best Shakeology flavors? Choose from this list:

Shakeology is the only superfood powder on the market that offers a really wide flavor selection. Typically, the manufacturers want to avoid adding anything unhealthy to the formula. Artificial flavoring makes the product taste better, but it also means you’re consuming fat, sugar, and sodium. Regardless, here are the best flavors:

  • Chocolate
  • Vanilla
  • Cafe Latte

Shakeology vegan vs regular whey: what’s the difference?

The only difference between the vegan and regular whey options is that the regular whey utilizes whey protein isolate. Whey protein isolate is an extremely pure and efficient form of protein, which makes the regular whey version appealing unless you’re vegan. Whey protein isolate is not vegan.

The vegan version utilizes different protein sources that are less efficient, but the upside is that they’re vegan. The vegan option contains pea protein, rice protein, oat protein, and quinoia.

Shakeology whey ingredients list

  • Blueberry
  • Flax
  • Maca root
  • Lycium berry
  • Pomegranate
  • Quinoa
  • Matcha green tea
  • Cherry
  • Bilberry
  • Rose hips
  • Ashwagandha
  • Astragalus
  • Cordyceps
  • Whey protein isolate

1. Quinoa

Quinoa is commonly referred to as a superfood or a “supergrain,” however it is actually a seed. This seed is a good source of protein, fiber, iron, copper, and more beneficial nutrients, which is ultimately what makes it a superfood. It is one of the only plant foods that actually offers complete proteins, and therefore also contains all essential amino acids.

2. Flax

Flax seed has been shown to produce a plethora of health benefits. The reason this ingredient is so nutritious is because, amongst other things, it contains three key components: fiber, lignans, and Omega-3 essential fatty acids. There are not many other ingredients in the world that contain all three of these extremely healthy components, which makes flax seed one of the healthiest and most nutritious superfoods.

3. Pomegranate

Pomegranate is an extremely beneficial superfood due to its extremely high concentration of Vitamin C and antioxidants. It actually contains three times more antioxidants than red wine or green tea, which makes it one of the most powerful detoxifying ingredients known to man. Red wine and green tea both contain a lot of antioxidants, so suffice it to say, getting three times the amount with Pomegranate is a big deal.

4. Matcha Green Tea

Matcha Green Tea contains a very high amount of antioxidants. As we mentioned before, it doesn’t contain quite as much as Pomegranate does, but it still contains enough to produce significant benefits. Many studies have linked Green Tea to health benefits including improved metabolism and higher energy levels. Some people swear it helps with weight loss as well.

Shakeology vegan ingredients list

  • Blueberry
  • Flax
  • Maca root
  • Lycium berry
  • Pomegranate
  • Quinoa
  • Matcha green tea
  • Chlorella
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Rice

5. Chlorella

Chlorella is one of the most important superfoods to make sure your greens powder contains. This algae contains vitamins, protein, iron, fiber, antioxidants, and Omega-3s. It contains more beneficial nutrients than just about any other superfood, next to Spirulina. Studies have shown it can help improve your immune system as well as have major detoxifying benefits.

6. Spinach

Spinach contains a high concentration of vitamins K, C, and A. It also contains a healthy amount of Iron and Magnesium, both of which many people are deficient in. Spinach just might be the single healthiest vegetable, and yet most people have none of it in their diet whatsoever because it tastes so bad. Well, it’s much easier to consume in the form of a green drink as opposed to eating it raw.

7. Kale

Kale contains just about every vitamin there is (not literally, but close) as well as calcium, magnesium, copper, and potassium, making it a true superfood. As is the case with most superfoods, Kale does not taste very good. However, when it is in powder form as part of a green drink blend, you won’t even know it’s in there and still get the benefits.

Shakeology pros and cons

Here are the benefits and side effects of Shakeology.

Shakeology benefits

The range of Shakeology health benefits is pretty wide since it contains so many nutritious superfoods. Some of the benefits include improvements in energy, vitality, gastrointestinal function, detoxification, and more. With 6,500 milligrams worth of powerful superfoods in every serving, you can expect some solid benefits. However, here’s our major problem…

Most people look at the number 6,500 and think that’s a lot of superfoods. The problem is in reality, it is actually NOT a significant amount of superfoods comparatively speaking. Our #1 ranked greens powder contains over TWICE the amount of superfoods at 15,000 milligrams, and our #2 ranked contains 10,000 MG.

So, you can see how you would have a lot more benefits to reap with either one of those supplements as opposed to Shakeology, which is comparatively very weak.

Shakeology side effects

There are no common side effects that come with using Shakeology since it only contains natural ingredients – vegetables, superfoods, etc. We don’t see anything on the label that would cause issues for consumers. However, it is possible for some people to have adverse reactions to superfood powders when they first start taking them.

If your body is not used to such healthy nutrients, you may at first experience stomach discomfort and irregular bowel movements. These are not necessarily very common benefits, but sometimes your body needs time to adjust to the supplement.

Other Shakeology cons

Aside from Shakeology severely lacking potency compared to some of its competitors, there are a couple of other cons we want to make note of.

The first con is about the flavor options. These are not healthy flavors…chocolate, vanilla, etc. In order to make their products taste chocolatey, they have to add artificial flavors, stevia, and other things that are not good for you and may cause you to gain fat.

Compared to other superfood powders, the sodium count is going to be rather high here due to all of the added flavors. It’s much better to stick with a green drink that does not add so many unhealthy flavors.

Another con is the value. This produce is INSANELY overpriced. You pay $130 for 30 servings, which is preposterous. Our top ranked greens powders contain significantly MORE superfoods and actually cost significantly LESS. This may be the most overpriced greens powder on the entire market.

Shakeology complaints & praise (info from real Shakeology customer reviews)

Since Shakeology opted to sell their product strictly through their Beach Body website as opposed to listing it on Amazon, there is not necessarily a reliable place to find reviews. However, there are some other review sites out there run by consumers who have tried the product, so let’s see what they had to say.

We were able to find a few Shakeology reviews across the web, and it appears most people are happy with the taste of the product and the way it makes them feel. However, there seems to be consensus that it’s not worth the price. Many customer reviews say that the product made them feel good, but not good enough to justify a hefty $130 price tag.

There are a lot of negative Shakeology reviews if you look hard enough. It seems most people are mainly upset about the price. There are also other supplement analysts similar to myself who agree that the superfood blend is way too weak to justify the price.

Is Shakeology worth it? Our Shakeology review conclusion

In case you can’t already tell, we are not very high on Shakeology. We see this as potentially the most overrated and overpriced greens powder on the market. It contains a lot of beneficial superfoods and other nutrients, but the potency pales in comparison to that of its competitors.

There are several other greens supplements that blow this one out of the water and actually cost less money. We do NOT recommend Shakeology. If you want to see our top recommendation in terms of superfood supplements, click the link below!

Shakeology FAQs

Do you need a blender for Shakeology?

No, you do not need a blender for Shakeology. The powder is designed to be mixed in with a glass of water or juice, which should only require a spoon and not a blender. With that being said, the texture is rather nasty, and the drink can get pretty lumpy if not mixed properly. I would personally recommend using a shaker cup for best results, but you do not need a blender.

Is Shakeology safe?

We can assume Shakeology is safe based on the supplement facts panel. All of the ingredients are natural, and it does not contain anything that is commonly known to cause side effects.

Is Shakeology FDA approved?

No, Shakeology is not FDA approved.

Does Shakeology make you gain weight?

Shakeology could potentially make you gain weight due to the use of flavor enhancing ingredients that may cause fat gain such as sugar, salt, and stevia.

If you use Shakeology as a meal replacement supplement, it’s possible that you could lose weight over time, but we don’t see it realistically being able to help you to lose a lot of weight.

Do Shakeology shakes taste good?

Some of the Shakeology shakes do taste pretty good, but at what cost? When you add chocolate flavoring to a superfood supplement, you are kind of defeating the purpose of the supplement.

Does vegan Shakeology taste different than regular?

Vegan Shakeology is going to taste slightly different than regular in terms of texture. This is because the regular one has whey protein isolate, which has better texture than vegan protein sources.

Can I buy Shakeology without a coach?

Yes, you can buy Shakeology without a coach. There is no reason why you would need a coach.

What is Shakeology sweetened with?

Shakeology is sweetened with cane sugar, salt, and stevia. This is all bad news. These sweeteners are one of the major cons of Shakeology. Top shelf superfood supplements do not contain such unhealthy additives.
